Back in the 90’s I was really into Britpop and anything that was coming out of there such as Blur and Oasis. When “Bittersweet Symphony” came out I ate it up and bought the album. Reminiscing to my younger days this week has led me to the nostalgia of rock in the 90’s. Although the 2000’s have introduced us to wonderful acts, the feeling I get listening to this just doesn’t compare to what’s out today. For all of you lovers of 90’s rock, take a listen to this album if you haven’t already. Trust me, it’s worth it.

A favorite of mine by The Verve’s singer, Richard Ashcroft and Unkle.

Surprisingly, The Prodigy’s Liam Howlett made a special mix for the BBC’s Radio 1’s show The Breezeblock which I found in a used cd store across from FIU almost 13 years ago. Unfortunately that store closed but right before it did I found this gem. What really surprised me was the amount of hip hop samples in it. Also, it was The Prodigy we’re talking about here, the dudes that brought us hits such as “Smack My Bitch Up” and “Firestarter” so listening to this, coming from them, really struck me. Anyways, I can’t find my original cd of this mix but I was able to find it online! For any of you that haven’t heard it, please do. I think you’ll really dig it.

Finally getting back into town and being able to read my emails and discover new music, I came across a very good album by Skeleton Zoo. First hearing a song on WVUM, the group immediately intrigued me as I’ve been prone to listen to mostly instrumental music this year. What made me really happy was the fact that the band is allowing listeners to download their EP digitally through their bandcamp website for free. I’ve recently been going back to buying music again because I want to start to supporting artists again. Although most of their money is made through touring, I think a little extra $ in their pocket doesn’t hurt. Anyways, give this EP a listen, it’s definitely worth your time.

Luckily the Jacuzzi Gals were able to make a site especially for the video as it has been brought down way too much. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this and for making such noise out of it. Plus the song is so rad. Go Jacuzzi Boys and Jacuzzi Gals!

Unfortunately my downloading skills were unsuccessful at finding the album so I’ll wait until it comes out.

Today they posted this video below that blew my mind. Technology just keeps getting more and more advanced and when the right person gets their hands on the right equipment, they make things like this:

Like I’ve mentioned before, it was a pleasure for me to work with Barry Jenkins on his short film Chlorophyl which will be screening this Saturday, April 23 at the 7th annual Borscht Film Festival. The New Times wrote their cover story on Barry Jenkins, his film, and a little history about where he came from. Please take a minute and read the article, it’s great and it portrays how talented this young director really is. Much love Barry, much love.

I’ve always been a fan of documentary and journalistic photography and maybe someday I can actually do it for a living. I came across this Kickstarter project today and thought it was quite interesting. A photographer based in Brooklyn shot malls across the country back in ‘89 to capture the “loss of regional differences” across the nation. He emphasizes how he looked at the photographs he shot throughout the years and didn’t know what to do with them, but he knew he wanted to do something. Luckily, his project got attention and now he’s raising funds to make a book that will include stories by writers for the images. Take a look at this story, it’s a great read and if you feel inspired like I did, help out and fund even a dollar to his project.

Ok, I know I’ve posted plenty about this festival but the week has come for its grand premiere and you all must go! Not only will you see amazing shorts, but you get to see me too! I participated in 2 of the films this year so it’ll be a great way for you to either praise me as an actress or throw rotten tomatoes at me. HA! So please do come and I promise you’ll have a blast and see some of Miami’s best filmmakers/artists! Here are the trailers to the two films that I got to be in:

Like many twenty-somethings, the question of parenthood comes to mind here and there. As we reach our 30’s we wonder whether or not we want to become parents and at what age it’s best to have them. In a recent article on Details magazine, the question of having children was the main topic. The writer, Brian Frazer, made it a point to express why him and his wife decided long ago that they would not have children of their own. In recent years, popularity has risen for those who have decided, with their partners, to not have a family. In 1990, 65% of adults said children were very important in a successful marriage. Flash forward to 2007 where only 41% of adults said this. With a drop of 25%, this may mean that new families will become more scarce. But what is the reasoning behind it? Some say they don’t want to deal with the stress and others say they are happy without children. Whatever the reason may be, opinions of parenting and raising families have changed drastically in the past 30 years. Independent couples are now more likely to stuff money into their savings account for 3 month long trips to Europe than their son’s college tuition. What’s your take on the topic?

Borscht 2011 Collaboration Announcement

Today I’m proud to announce that our short film REMIGRATION for ITVS’ Futurestates Season 2 is live over at the Futurestates website:

http://futurestates.tv/episodes/re-migration

In conjunction with the film’s release, I wanted to try my hand at a bit of DIY promotion by offering one lucky tweeter/tumblrer/facebooker a free copy of still photographer David Bornfriend’s handprinted book featuring imagery from the film.

To enter the “contest”, just tweet, tumble or facebook the movie and we’ll track you down with our interweb snooping. Hashtags work best, but don’t worry, we’ll do our best to hunt down each and every post we can find between now and close of business Wednesday.

From Owl and Tiger press:

For Barry Jenkins’ latest film, he called upon fellow O/T owner David Bornfriend to capture unique behind the scene imagery. Edited specially for O/T, the book is as compelling and beautiful as the film itself. 68 pages, full color digital offset, coptic bound, with raw hardcover. Limited edition of 20

http://owlandtiger.com/

Having watched Owl and Tiger co-owners David Bornfriend and Patrick Aguilar hand cut and stitch these things together, I can say with reasonable objectivity how beautiful and moving these images truly are. When I look at them, I see a group of people banding together for a common purpose, captured in the fluid, intimate moments of the making of this film.

Can’t ask for more than that. Thankful David was available to us so we could share these moments of just that.

Now get those hashtags going!

-Barry

I was asked to participate on his new project for the Borscht Film Festival and accepted the offer because something told me I should work with him and I’m glad I did. This young man not only believes in what he does, but lives it. Not only did Barry impress me but so did all the crew I got to meet and work with. It made me realize why it is that all of us got into the film industry and why so many of us have such a passion for it. I wanted to share Barry’s new project, Remigration, with all of you because it is a must watch, not only for its story but for its visuals as well. Hope you enjoy it.

Instead of shooting digital, which I rarely do, I decided to buy a cheap disposable camera. Surprisingly enough, it shot some of the best photographs I’ve ever taken with one. Check them out, hope you enjoy them.
LA Trip Feb. 2011 on Flickr!

C. Thanks to my iTunes this morning, I remembered that Sharon Jones was coming to town and to my surprise, she’s here this Sunday!! For all of you that have not had the pleasure to hear the soulful sounds of band, please tune into this:

This was one of the first songs from the group that I heard back when I was 19 years old and my dear friend Phi gave me the album Naturally, which I played non-stop. I have to admit that I haven’t followed their music per say, but this is definitely a show I can’t miss and of course, I will be playing them non-stop all week. For all you funk and soul lovers out there, take advantage of this great show coming to town.
